MANILA – The Makati City Police said Saturday that they have identified two persons of interest in the killing of Monaliza "Monette" Bernardo, former Makati City Mayor Junjun Binay's long-time aide.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Makati City Police chief Senior Supt. Rogelio Simon said they are now looking at two persons of interest, based on the statement of two witnesses. But the police chief declined to give further details so as not to jeopardize their investigation.
“We have two persons of interest na tinutumbok namin, dun yung direksyon ng investigation,” Simon said.
“Pagtutugmain, ihaharmonize namin ang mga statement nila… Magko-cross matching kami, kung ano ang connection ng physical aspect sa person of interest namin,” he added.
Bernardo died on Friday night due to gunshot wounds sustained when she was attacked at her home the previous night.
A report by the Makati City Police showed that 44-year-old Bernardo just alighted from her vehicle and was about to enter her residence in Barangay Olympia when an unidentified gunman shot her.
The gunman boarded a waiting blue motorcycle and immediately fled towards South Avenue.
Police are seeking CCTV footage in areas where the assailants possibly escaped.
In a footage they secured, the gunman is seen changing his shirt while on board a motorcycle.
“Habang tumatakbo ang motor, ang gunman ay nagpapalit ng damit. Papunta sila ng Brgy. Sta Cruz,” Simon said.
Simon has already requested for CCTV footage from four barangays for their investigation.
“We requested CCTV footage from four barangays na possible na dinaanan. Meron ding humabol pero di na nahabol. Sa tulong ng CCTV, masusundan natin ang kanilang escape route nitong riding-in-tandem,” he said.
He added, “Nirerequest din namin sa kapatid na iturnover sa amin for digital forensics ang dalawang cellphone ng biktima.”
The remains of Bernardo were brought to the Loyola Memorial Chapel in Guadalupe, Makati City on Saturday afternoon. The family has requested for privacy in their time of grief.
