MANILA (UPDATED) – Two US Navy aviators were rescued after ejecting from their aircraft over the Philippine Sea on Thursday, officials of a US Navy aircraft carrier said.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt public affairs office said in a statement that the two aviators were flying an F/A-18F Super Hornet while conducting "routine pilot proficiency training" when the incident occurred.

The pilot and his weapons systems officer were immediately rescued by a helicopter assigned to a squadron aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt. They are in good condition, the public affairs office said.

Officials did not elaborate on why the pilots ejected but said the "incident is currently under investigation."
