6th AnimeJapan Event Draws 146,500 Visitors During Public Days

The sixth AnimeJapan event at the Tokyo Big Sight complex drew an estimated 146,500 over its first two days (the show's public days on Saturday and Sunday). The attendance is less than last year's attendance of 152,331, although that count is across all four days of the event (including business days). The attendance exceeds 2017's attendance of 145,453 people, and 2016's attendance of 135,323 people. 2016's event was held over three days.

14,285 people attended the separately but simultaneously held Family Anime Festa event, slightly down from 14,304 last year. The event took place in Tokyo Big Sight's East Hall 7, simultaneously with AnimeJapan's public days.

AnimeJapan will return to Tokyo Big Sight next year and run from March 21 to 24, 2020. (The Family Anime Festa event will run from March 21 to 22, 2020.) However, the event will move from Tokyo Big Sight's East Exhibition Hall/New East Exhibition Hall and Conference Tower, to the West Exhibition Hall, South Exhibition Hall, and Conference Tower. Depending on how the event uses the facilities, this year's East Halls have 67,260 square meters of floor area, while next year's West and South Halls have only 57,280 square meters.

Tokyo Big Sight is currently undergoing renovations in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Olympics is reserving the entire complex for use as the main press center and international broadcasting center, and the resulting shutdown has also affected Comic Market event for this year and next year.

This is the first year of the event where the order of business days and public days have been changed, with the first two days (March 23-24; Saturday-Sunday) as the event's public days, and the last two days (March 25-26; Monday-Tuesday) as the event's business days. In previous years, the business days took place on Thursday and Friday before the public days on Saturday and Sunday. Thursday, March 21, was a national holiday in Japan.

The event previously had industry-only days in 2015 and 2016; both years had one industry day overlapping with the public day. AnimeJapan started holding two dedicated industry-only days in 2017.

The AnimeJapan event debuted in 2014 as the merger of two previous events — Tokyo International Anime Fair (TAF) and Anime Contents Expo (ACE).
