MAKATI – Reelectionist mayor Abigail "Abby" Binay on Friday made her campaign a family affair, accompanied by her father, former vice-president Jejomar Binay, and her daughter Martina.
Mother and child were locked in an embrace as the 9-year-old introduced her mom to the thousands of people who attended the miting de avance of Makati’s Team Performance at Metropolitan Avenue.
“I introduce to you my Mom and my best friend, Mayor Abby Binay," said Martina, whose voice trembled as she tried to control the emotion that welled up to her throat.
The young girl tried to hide her face in an embrace with her mom, who also ended up crying.
In her speech, Abby admitted that the mayoral race was tougher compared to 2016.
She’s fighting head-on against her own brother, former Mayor Junjun Binay.
The sour relationship between siblings went public last year, when Junjun filed his certificate of candidacy to run for mayor against his older sister.
Their mom Elenita and sisters Nancy and Anne took the side of Junjun, while their father joined Abby.
In 2015, Junjun Binay was dismissed from his post as mayor for allegations of irregularities in contracts entered by his administration in Makati for the construction of city projects.
Then-Vice Mayor Kid Pena assumed the post, leaving no Binay seated at the city hall.
Mayor Abby was then a 3-term congresswoman planning to end her career and retire from politics. But her family prodded her to fight Pena and seek the mayor’s post. She was elected in 2016.
“Akala natin 2016 ang mabigat na laban mo, pero may mas mabigat pa pala,” said Abby, as she narrated their family’s struggle when her father ran for the 2016 presidency.
The former VP is now running for the congressional seat of Makati’s 1st legislative district. Despite family disagreement, the elder Binay took the side of her daughter in the fight against her brother.
Abby told her dad how proud she was and made a promise that she will never tarnish their family’s name.
