A public altercation between former Makati Mayor Junjun Binay and his sister, incumbent Mayor Abigail Binay, inside a church has no precedent, an election watchdog said Monday.

The children of former Vice President Jejomar Binay, who are both running for mayor of the financial district, disrupted Saturday an election forum at the San Ildefonso Parish Church organized by the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting.

"Sa totoo lang, ngayon lang nangyari iyan sa loob ng simbahan," said PPCRV Vice Chairman Johnny Cardenas.

(Honestly, this is the first time that happened inside a church.)

Elections forums are often organized by PPCRV inside churches with the expectation that candidates will behave as they are inside a place of worship, he said.

Candidates during such events should only present their election platforms to parishioners and are barred from hurling accusations against opponents, said Cardenas.

"Bawal dito iyung titirahin mo iyung kalaban mo… Mag focus ka lang doon sa 'yo," he told radio DZMM.

(You are not allowed to hit your opponent. You should focus only on yourself.)

During Saturday's forum, Abigail called on her opponents to stop spreading lies. After returning to her seat beside Junjun, Abigail appeared to talk angrily to her younger brother.

Both then raised their voices, with Junjun later standing up and kneeling in front of Abigail.

The forum ended with the crowd cheering and booing after Junjun said he was disappointed over the turn of events.

Abigail said her brother accused her and her husband of involvement in the death of a longtime aide. Junjun, meanwhile, said Abigail falsely accused him of linking her husband to illegal drugs.
