COVID-19 cases surging in other regions, says DOH

MANILA – The Department of Health (DOH) is seeing a surge in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in other regions, as clusters identified by the Epidemiology Bureau reach 638. 

Several cities and regions are under monitoring due to an increase in COVID-19 cases this week, said Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said during a media briefing.

While the National Capital Region, which has 33,961 confirmed cases as of July 18, remained on top of DOH's watchlist, other regions are closely watched. 

“Binabantayan natin as of July 19, ang top regions natin by new cases this week, we have Region 4A, we have Region 7, we have Western Visayas, we have Central Luzon and Northern Mindanao," said Vergeire.

“Meron din tayong top provinces and cities July 12 to 18, We have the city of Manila, Quezon City, city of Mandaluyong, Cebu City, city of Navotas and city of Makati,” she added. 

“May mga numbers sila na pinapakita, kinocompare kasi natin ito with the previous cases also that happened in their locality," she added. 

Based on Sunday’s COVID-19 situationer report, the National Capital Region logged 7,413 additional cases in the last week, Region 4A (Calabarzon) 1,158, Region 7 (Central Visayas) 1,060, Region 6 (Western Visayas 309, Region 3 (Central Luzon) 251, and Region 10 (Northern Mindanao) 234.

Meanwhile, topping the list of cities with new cases last week are Manila with 2,086 new cases, Quezon City with 1,017, Mandaluyong City with 620, Cebu City with 373, Navotas City with 353, Makati City with 346.

Vergeire also said that there are now 638 COVID-19 clusters identified by the Epidemiology Bureau.

A total of 79 of these were reported from July 15 to 17.

Of the total, 49 are in hospitals and 24 are in jails although none were reported recently. 

Of the 513 clusters in communities, the breakdown is as follows:

National Capital Region: 170
Central Visayas: 122
Eastern Visayas: 36
Central Luzon: 25
Davao Region: 20
Western Visayas: 20
Bicol Region: 13
Northern Mindanao: 12
Zamboanga Peninsula: 11
Cagayan Valley: 5
Cordillera Administrative Region: 2

Just recently, media reported that a high-profile inmate died due to COVID-19 in the New Bilibid Prison.

This brings the total number of inmates who died in two Bureau of Corrections facilities to 18.
