MANILA – The identification cards of those who accessed the Freedom of Information (FOI) website were exposed in an apparent data leak, a columnist said Thursday.
In a Facebook post, Wilson Chua said his personal details were exposed after the ID he used on government website www.foi.gov.ph could be searched online using "eFOI ID."
"They (FOI PH) asked for personal details and MADE the attachment PUBLIC!!! According to what I know of the data privacy act, 'You must protect what you collect'," he said.
"And it seems it was not only mine that was leaked. All of you that made public FOI requests and were asked to submit personal ID details. You should ask that FOI secure those content. ASAP."
Chua said his formal complaint before the National Privacy Commission was certified Friday and that he has also filed a blotter report at the local police.
"This should make for a great wake up call to all data collectors. this is what happens to the poor victims when you don't do a good enough job of protecting our private data," he said.
The FOI website allows Filipinos to request any information about government transactions and operations.
Malacañang and the NPC have launched an investigation into the alleged data leak, according to a report by the Inquirer.
