Ducati racer Carlin Dunne died at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on Sunday, June 30, when he crashed his motorcycle near the finish line.

The 36 year-old Dunne, who hails from Santa Barbara, California, was riding the Ducati Streetfighter V4 prototype that he was testing for the company. Dunne was well on his way to setting a new motorcycle speed record as the fastest rider of the event when he lost control of his bike so close to the end of the race.

The cause of the accident is not yet known, but one thing is for sure: the motorcycling world lost one of its most prolific champions, as Dunne has been the Pikes Peak race winner a total of four times in the past.

Jason Chinnock, CEO of Ducati North America, expressed regret on behalf of the company.

“There are no words to describe our shock and sadness. Carlin was part of our family and one of the most genuine and kind men we have ever known,” Chinnock said. “His spirit for this event and love of motorcycling will be remembered forever as his passing leaves a hole in our hearts.”

“We mourn the tragic death of Carlin and he will remain in our hearts forever as part of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb family,” said the Board of Directors of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in a news release. “Carlin will be remembered as a warm-hearted mentor with a competitive spirit.”

Dunne is the seventh Hill Climb participant to have died taking part in the event.
