MANILA- President Rodrigo Duterte deferred the announcement of his decision on the fate of community quarantines in Luzon to his spokesman, and instead used his speech to warn the public against the dangers of the coronavirus pandemic.
Duterte said his spokesman Harry Roque will use state media to discuss the decision on the enhanced community quarantine and general community quarantine protocols set to expire on Friday, May 15.
"He (Roque) will be using that government facility to convey the message of what has been decided tonight," the President said in a taped message Tuesday.
"Iyong — a lockdown, they will explain there to you thoroughly by Secretary Roque at mayroon tayong mga tawag niyang 'new normal,'" he said.
Health Secretary Francisco Duque III will also address the public, the President said.
For over 30 minutes, Duterte instead addressed the public on the importance of wearing face masks, practicing physical distancing, and even criticized communist rebels.
Duterte met with the government's pandemic task force on Monday night to decide on the fate of community quarantines across the country.
As of Monday, the Philippines has tallied 11,086 infections since its first case was reported on Jan. 30. This includes 726 deaths and 1,999 recoveries.
