Duterte wants Yuletide assistance for barangay workers

MANILA — President Rodrigo Duterte has asked all village councils to roll out a Yuletide assistance program for all their members and officials. 

In an executive order signed Dec. 6 and released Monday, Duterte enjoined Sangguniang Barangays across the country to establish the holiday program "for the economic empowerment" of village workers who "are at the forefront in the delivery of essential and basic government services." 

The Yuletide Social Assistance Program should be charged against the barangays' respective available funds, Duterte said. 

He also tasked the interior and budget departments to issue guidelines to carry out his order, which "shall take effect immediately.
