MANILA – Senator Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III questioned Monday the motivation behind the new perjury complaint filed against him by the lawyer of former President and now Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Topacio filed a perjury complaint against Pimentel over the 2011 electoral sabotage case filed by the latter against Mrs. Arroyo, who is Topacio’s client.
The said case was dismissed in December 2018.
For Pimentel, the timing of Topacio's perjury complaint is questionable, given that he is seeking reelection in the Senate.
"Pagdating sa motibasyon, what is his motivation, you ask Atty. Topacio. Ang masasagot ko lang diyan, 2007 'yung insidente, 'yung mga dokumento, I think 2010, 2011, ang petsa na po ngayon, 2019, palapit na ang Mayo 13," he told DZMM Teleradyo.
(In terms of motivation, what is his motivation, you ask Atty. Topacio. What I can say is the incident happened in 2007, the documents were released around 2010, 2011. It's already 2019 now, we're nearing May 13.)
"Siguro tanungin na lang natin si Atty. Topacio, ano ba talaga ang motivation niya? Election distraction ba ito or negative campaigning ba ito?" Pimentel added.

In 2011, Pimentel filed a non-bailable electoral sabotage against former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, her husband and more than ten others for “conspiring” to commit fraud in the 2007 elections.
