MANILA – Medical workers who succumb to COVID-19 should be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, a lawmaker said Thursday, after increasing cases of the respiratory disease prompted an extended lockdown of half of the country's population.

Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Alfredo Garbin said he would ask Congress to tap the Heroes' Cemetery as the final resting place of the cremated remains of medical frontliners.

"Their families, colleagues, and friends deserve to profoundly feel the eternal gratitude of the Filipino people for their supreme sacrifice, staying at the front lines, knowing it would cost them their lives. Future generations of Filipinos will honor them every time we commemorate National Heroes Day," he said in a statement.

Twelve health workers have died of the pandemic, the health department said Wednesday.

The Philippines so far confirmed 3,870 cases of the respiratory disease, with 182 deaths and 96 patients who recovered.
