MANILA – A candidate for mayor of San Juan on Thursday said former senator Jinggoy Estrada will become de facto mayor of the city if his daughter, Janella, wins the mayoralty.

Francis Zamora, who is former San Juan vice mayor, alleged that the business community in San Juan is "very worried that if Janella wins, Jinggoy will be back as mayor."

"I see Jinggoy leading San Juan if she will win. It is very obvious that Jinggoy is the one behind her candidacy," the 41-year-old Zamora told ANC's Headstart.

"If Jinggoy becomes de facto mayor, that means we are going back to the late 90's, early 2000's where our budget was just P300 million then," he said.

"If you will compare the Jinggoy and JV (Ejercito) and Guia (Gomez) administration, during the time of Mayor Jinggoy, San Juan was really not progressive. You have the budget as a basis, the development as a basis," he said.

The former senator, however, rejected Zamora's claims, saying he will not meddle with his daughter's leadership.

"That's not true. My daughter is very competent. She will not allow me to meddle with her decisions," Estrada said in a statement.

He also denied that San Juan lacked progress under his rule as city mayor. Estrada served as mayor of San Juan from 1992 to 2001.

"When I came in, budget was only P60 million. I increased to P300 million for development of San Juan," he said.

Zamora is running against the 29-year-old younger Estrada in a bid to end the half-century long rule of former President Joseph "Erap" Estrada's clan in San Juan.

Zamora, son of San Juan Rep. Ronaldo Zamora, also belongs to a political dynasty once allied with the Estrada family.

The rift between the 2 dynasties in San Juan started in 2015 after father and son Ronaldo and Francis Zamora were allegedly dropped from the Estrada lineup for the 2016 elections.

The Zamoras earlier claimed that Francis was supposed to be the runningmate of re-electionist mayor Gomez, but was replaced by Janella who was then being groomed by the Ejercito-Estradas as another political scion.

Rep. Zamora, who was supposed to be the congressional bet of the Estrada-led United Nationalist Alliance, was replaced by Jana Ejercito who was former President Estrada's niece.
