MANILA – The University of the Philippines College of Nursing on Friday announced the passing of Faye Marie Luna Palafox, an alumna from Class of 1995.

Palafox spent her last 7 days at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), where she was head nurse of 5RCB1, ensuring that fellow nurses wear their personal protective gears against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

"Ms. Palafox has lived the true essence of IskoNars para sa Bayan, having served the Philippine General Hospital initially as a staff nurse in 1996 and rose ranks to become the Head Nurse of 5RCB1," UP said on social media.

"While we mourn her passing, we continue to celebrate her life characterized by unwavering dedication and commitment to serve the Filipino people beyond the call of duty. A true UP Nurse, a true IskoNars para sa Bayan," it added.

UP, however, did not disclose the cause of her death.

The PGH, among hospitals responding to the COVID-19 crisis, has 102 admitted patients confirmed to have caught the disease.

Two probable cases and 20 suspected cases for COVID-19 are also hospitalized in PGH.

The Department of Health on Friday announced over 750 health care workers in the Philippines have contracted COVID-19.

Of that number, 339 are doctors and 242 are nurses. The DOH did not mention the exact professions of the remaining 185 health care workers.

The DOH has also recorded 22 health-care workers who have died because of the disease.
