MANILA (UPDATED) – Reelectionist Sen. JV Ejercito has reunited with his father, Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada, about a week after the lawmaker admitted that their relationship remains cold.
Ejercito resigned from his father's political party last year and joined Senate President Vicente Sotto III's Nationalist People's Coalition.
The move came after his half-brother, former senator Jinggoy Estrada, announced that he would also run for a Senate seat.
In an Instagram post on Tuesday night, Ejercito shared a photo of him and his father holding glasses of wine.
"It's been awhile… father and son bonding," he captioned the photo.
Their encounter at a restaurant in San Juan was arranged by a family friend, Ejercito told ABS-CBN News.
Ejercito said he only engaged in a "light conversation" with his father and that there was "no serious talk."
"Ayoko mag open political talk. Baka mag away lang kami ulit," he said in a text message.
(I don't want to open any political talk, we might argue again.)
Ejercito earlier predicted that his relationship with his father will soon warm up.
"Malamig pero iinit din 'yan (It's cold but it will heat up soon)," he said during the "Harapan 2019: The ABS-CBN Senatorial Town Hall Debate" on March 3.
He also said he is not closing the door to a possible return to his father's party, Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino.
The older Estrada earlier said Ejercito's departure from his party was probably because he doesn't want to be recognized as his son.
During the filing of certificates of candidacies last year, the former president opted to accompany only Jinggoy.
Jinggoy and Ejercito are running alongside each other in administration-backed Hugpong ng Pagbabago.
