MANILA (UPDATE) – A magnitude 5.4 earthquake struck off Dinagat Islands on Monday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The tremor, which was earlier reported to be a magnitude 5.3, hit at 10:16 a.m., some 49 kilometers northeast of the town of Loreto.
Phivolcs said it was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 30 kilometers.
Intensity 5, which may feel like a strong shaking and rocking and may cause hanging objects to swing violently, was felt in Loreto.
Intensity 4, which may feel like the passing of a heavy truck and may cause hanging objects to swing considerably, was felt in Silago, Southern Leyte.
Intensity 3, which may feel like vibration from the passing of a light truck, was felt in Surigao City; San Jose, Dinagat Islands; Limasawa, San Francisco, San Juan, Hinunangan and Maasin City, Southern Leyte; Tacloban City; Ormoc City, Palo, Hilongos, Bato, Hindang, Babatngon, Javier, MacArthur, Tanauan, Matalom, Abuyog, Isabel, Capoocan and Dagami, Leyte; and Lawaan, Eastern Samar.
The following instrumental intensities were meanwhile recorded in these areas:
- Intensity 4 – Borongan City
- Intensity 3 – Surigao City
- Intensity 2 – Palo, Leyte
- Intensity 1 – Talibon, Bohol; Roxas City; Gingoog City
No damage is expected from the quake but is likely to spawn aftershocks, Phivolcs said.
