MMDA Wants 60-KPH Speed Limit on All Metro Manila Roads

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) recently confirmed its plans to uphold a 60-kph speed limit on all roads in Metro Manila.

MMDA General Manager Jojo Garcia reasons that implementing the proposed speed limit Metro-wide will lessen vehicular accidents, especially during the wee hours of the morning and during off-peak hours.

“‘Yung sa speed limit yung 60 kilometers-per-hour, ‘pag madaling araw nagkakaroon ng aksidente,” Garcia told reporters. “Ili-limit natin ng 60-kph lahat sa Metro Manila.”

Most highways already have the 60-kph speed limit enforced, while most expressways have a 100-kph maximum.

Responding to backlash from the public believing that heavy traffic prevents them from hitting 60 kph anyways, Gracia said, “Nagkatawanan na naman, nakakatakbo ba tayo ng 60? Sa Commonwealth, medyo maluwag diyan, ang Roxas Boulevard ‘pag tanghali lang makakatakbo ka ng 60 kph.”

“Some part ng EDSA, ‘yung pagdating ng Balintawak, Monumento maluwag na makakatakbo ka ng 60,” he added.

A lower speed limit has been proposed before on EDSA, Circumferential Road 5 (C5), Commonwealth Avenue, Roxas Boulevard, Quezon Avenue, and Marcos Highway by the Metro Manila Council from 60 to 50 kph, though the resolution was never signed by Metro Manila mayors.
