NBI wants Metro Manila police chief to explain birthday gathering despite quarantine

MANILA – The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said Thursday it would invite the Metro Manila police chief to explain alleged violations of quarantine regulations at his recent birthday party.

This, as Malacañang said criminal charges will be filed against National Capital Region Police Office chief Police Maj. Gen. Debold Sinas for a birthday gathering on May 8, which drew uproar for violations of enhanced community quarantine regulations. He is also facing administrative cases.

The NBI said it would send a letter inviting Sinas to give a statement on his birthday "mañanita," which allegedly defied quarantine regulations barring mass gatherings and requiring physical distancing.

Photos of the party, since deleted from the NCRPO Facebook page, showed several police officers gathered around tables, lined up for a buffet, and queueing to give their general roses.

Sinas has apologized but claimed the photos- which showed the officers in masks- were edited.
