MANILA – Filipinos should not worry about the bubonic plague entering the Philippines, Malacañang said Thursday, as it assured the public that authorities are guarding the country's borders.
Concerns on the disease were raised after a herdsman in Inner Mongolia was confirmed to be infected with the bubonic plague while the world battles the coronavirus pandemic.
Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque allayed concerns of Filipinos on the disease, saying the country's borders remain closed to foreign nationals as the government continues to guard against the importation of more COVID-19 infections.
"Sineseryoso po natin iyan, pero huwag po kayo mabahala kasi ang pagpasok naman ng mga dayuhan sa Pilipinas ay hindi pa po pinapayagan nang malawakan, case to case basis lang po," he said in a Palace press briefing.
(We are taking that seriously but there is no need to worry because we only allow the entry of foreigners on a case to case baisis.)
"So, sarado pa po ang ating mga borders, bagaman pupwede pong mag-request on individual basis iyong mga may balidong dahilan para pumasok ng Pilipinas. So sarado pa po ang ating mga borders, at wala pong dapat ikabahala,” he added.
(Our borders remain closed although there can be a request for entry from foreign nationals on an individual basis for those who have valid reasons to enter the Philippines. Our borders remain closed and there is no need to worry.)
The bubonic plague, which caused the Black Death in the Middle Ages, is caused by the Yersinia pestis bacterium and is transmitted by fleas that become infected by rodents.
