MANILA — Building more power plants is the "only solution" to recurring power reserve shortfalls, Meralco chairman Manuel Pangilinan said Thursday.
The country's largest power distributor warned of rotational 1 to 2-hour long brownouts for the second straight day on Thursday due to thin reserves.
"We just have to build more plants, di ba? That's the only solution we can think of," Pangilinan told reporters.
The thin reserves are a concern especially with demand expected to peak during summer, he said.
The Luzon grid is on red alert, the highest warning, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and under yellow alert, the second highest, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, the National Grid Corp said.
When asked about Maynilad Water Services Inc, Pangilinan said, "We are quite certain that wala kaming problema (we have no problem)."
Maynilad is in charge of the capital's west zone. Manila Water, in charge of the east, is experiencing supply issues.
