Resorts World Sentosa, a resort that includes Universal Studios Singapore, revealed on Friday that it will expand the theme park with "Super Nintendo World." The new area will be part of a US$3.3 billion expansion that will add 40 acres to the 120-acre resort. The addition will also include "Minion Park."
The project will be completed in phases, and new attractions are slated to open each year beginning in 2020. The full project is slated for completion by 2025.
"Super Nintendo World" will first open in Universal Studios Japan in Osaka in summer 2020. Universal Studios Japan began construction of its "Super Nintendo World" attractions in June 2017. Construction is also underway at Universal Studios Hollywood, and similar attractions are planned for the Universal Orlando Resort.
Nintendo and Universal Creative confirmed in 2016 that they are collaborating on the attractions at the three previously revealed parks. Nintendo had announced in May 2015 that it is partnering with Universal Parks & Resorts to bring Nintendo-themed attractions to Universal theme parks. Nintendo stated at the time that the "immersive experiences will include major attractions at Universal's theme parks and will feature Nintendo's most famous characters and games."
Illumination (Despicable Me, Minions, Sing), a subsidiary of Universal Pictures, is planning an animated film adaptation of Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. game franchise. Both Nintendo and Universal Pictures are funding the project, and Universal Pictures will distribute the film worldwide. Illumination founder Chris Meledandri revealed in November that the planned film is in “priority development” and may debut in theaters by 2022.
